2014 Visitor Information Centre Familiarization Tour

From May 25th through May 29th, visitor services staff from around Cape Breton Island embarked on a journey to see and experience new things on Cape Breton Island. The Fam Tour, which sees nearly 20 participants from VICs and partnering organizations visit operators on the island, was again an ambitious venture that paid dividends for our participants with fantastic opportunities to experience and network throughout.

As a first time tour participant, I was overwhelmed by the generosity of our operators. From accommodations to dining to the unique experiences our guests desire, we were treated as VIPs and shown the very real ‘Cape Breton hospitality’ we hear so much about. As a proud Cape Bretoner, my head is held even higher with the pride.

I am very excited for guests to see the new and revisited experiences being offered by Parks Canada this summer. I hope many people take the opportunity to ‘Have a Blast’ at the Fortress of Louisbourg or take a guided hike in the Highlands National Park. Spend a night at Cabot Links and be astounded of this world class facility. Centre de la Mi’careme is a must see spot for anyone with children, as it combines a chance to learn more about our Acadian culture and a level of fun and hands on experience I never would have imagined. And visit our overlooked heritage sites such as Fort Petrie in New Victoria, the Mabou Harbour Lighthouse, and the Glace Bay Heritage Museum. Not only are they packed full of historical importance, but they also run on the heart of their volunteers. I could speak like this about every operator, experience, accommodation, and meal. Our guests expect a standard of service that you exceed, which is a value proposition I am quite proud to convey.

More than any experience, the meet and greets were perhaps the most rewarding experience of the tour. The group could spend a month on the road and not meet every operator, so having operators come to us and have one on one conversation is essential. I personally picked up so many rack cards and brochures that piqued my interest that I convinced me that I have a lot of visiting to do this summer.

As our VICs begin the season, I would like to give sincere thanks to all who filled our week with knowledge we can convey to guests in our centres. Without you, there would be no need for us. Best of luck for an outstanding 2014 tourism season.

2013 Visitor Information Centre Open Houses

As we head into the 2013 tourism season we want to engage all Cape Bretoners to help promote and support all of the amazing experiences we have happening this summer

We are inviting the tourism industry, business sector, communities, Chambers of Commerce, community groups and residents to come out to a VIC open house near you. We hope that all will take this opportunity to come by and see how you can utilize your VIC to help promote your business as well as help each other.

There will be refreshments and presentations on some of the key events that are taking place this summer.

The open houses will be from 3pm -5pm at the following locations:

June 19th Louisbourg

June 20th Baddeck

June 21st Sydney

June 25th Inverness

June 26th Margaree

June 27th St Peters

June 28th Cheticamp
